    Birthstone - Gemstone
    History

Birthstones are associated with the date of one’s birth.
Wearing a gemstone is thought to bring good luck and good health. Supernatural powers are attributed to certain gemstones. Today’s gemstones have only a slight relationship to the ancient beliefs, because back then color was of greater importance than the materials. For instance lapis lazuli was more likely to be used than sapphire of today and diamond was probably a white sapphire or white topaz.

    From the Old Testament:

"Then, with the most careful workmanship, make a chestpiece that will be used to determine God’s will. Use the same materials as you did for the ephod: fine linen cloth embroidered with gold thread and blue, purple and scarlet yarn. This chest piece will be made of two folds of cloth, forming a pouch nine inches square. Four rows of gemstones will be attached to it. The first row will contain a red carnelian, a chrysolite, and an emerald. The second row will contain a turquoise, a sapphire, and a white moonstone. The third row will contain a jacinth, and agate and an amethyst. The fourth row will contain a beryl, an onyx and a jasper. All these stones will be set in gold. Each stone will represent one of the tribes of Israel, and the name of the tribe will be engraved on it as though it were a seal."

    Exodus Ch. 28 verse 15 - 21 NLT

    Months of the Year
    How they got their names

The word "month" is derived from the word "moon"

Throughtout January, and indeed from the middle of December, is the time when out door flowers for cutting and house decoration are most scarce; and yet there are Christmas Roses and Yellow Jasmine and Laurustinus, and in all open weather Iris siylosa and Czar Violets. Flower Chorus

Such a commotion under the ground,
When March called, "Ho there! ho!"
Such spreading of rootlets far and wide,
    Such whisperings to and fro!
"Are you ready?" the Snowdrop asked,
" 'Tis time to start, you know."
"Almost, my dear!" the Scilla replied,
"I'll follow as soon as you go."
Then "Ha! ha! ha!" a chorus came
    Of laughter sweet and low,
From millions of flowers under the ground,
    Yes, millions beginning to grow.

    Ralph W. Emerson 1803-1882

    Blue Moon
    Not an astronomical term

Unusual atmospheric conditions can cause the Moon to appear blue, such occurrences in earlier time may have led to the expression "Once in a Blue Moon".
Or the term Blue Moon may have been used to indicate two full moons falling within a calendar month. This happens on the average of every 2.72 years.
Or ... others have said it comes from the third full Moon during a season that has four full Moons.

Here are the dates for the second Full Moon of the MONTH.
In 1999 there were two full moons in January and in March.

Time of day is given in Universal Coordinated Time.
